Fumasep FBM is a PK-reinforced bipolar exchange membrane composed of an anion exchange layer (AEL) and a cation exchange layer (CEL), fabricated using patented multilayer-coating technology. Its polymer backbone is based on hydrocarbon materials, providing excellent chemical stability and mechanical strength supported by woven PEEK reinforcement. When operated under reverse bias with a potential difference above approximately 0.8 V, water dissociates efficiently into H⁺ and OH⁻ ions at the intermediate junction layer between AEL and CEL. For proper performance, the CEL must face the cathode and the AEL must face the anode. Under reverse bias, electrons transfer from the anode to the cathode, allowing water molecules to diffuse into the intermediate layer and undergo catalytic splitting. This membrane is delivered as a brown, flexible foil in wet condition. The standard size is 20×30 cm, with custom sizes available upon request.Operating Notice: Avoid forward bias, which may cause blistering, delamination, or irreversible damage. High current under forward bias can lead to micro-cracks and electrolyte cross-contamination.Unlike traditional electrolysis, this membrane produces no reaction gases during water splitting, achieving 1 mol of H⁺/OH⁻ at ~22 Wh/mol, far more efficient than conventional electrolysis (~55 Wh/mol).Membranes may show slight dimensional variation (±0.5 cm) or wrinkles due to humidity sensitivity. Soaking in deionized water restores full flatness.Key Features:Application: Salt SplittingpH Stability (25°C): 1 – 14Resists high caustic concentrationsThickness: 200 – 250 μmWater-splitting efficiency >98% at 100 mA cm⁻²Low operating voltage <1.2 V at 100 mA cm⁻²Excellent mechanical stability at thin profileSource: Fumasep FBM-PK from SCI Materials Hub.

  • Fumasep FBM bipolar membrane with PK reinforcement features an anion exchange layer and cation exchange layer based on hydrocarbon polymers. It offers great chemical stability and mechanical strength with woven PEEK support, ideal for water dissociation and electrochemical energy applications.
  • Delivered as wet brown foil with standard size 20*30cm, customizable sizes available. The membrane shows high water-splitting efficiency over 98% and low operating voltage below 1.2V at 100 mA cm⁻² in 0.5 M NaCl at 25°C.
  • Stable in full pH range 1–14 at 25°C and resistant to high caustic concentrations. With thickness 200–250 μm, it maintains excellent mechanical properties while enabling efficient ion migration in salt splitting systems.
  • Operates efficiently under reverse bias above 0.8 V to split water into H+ and OH− without gas generation, consuming only ~22 Wh per mole of ions, much more energy-efficient than conventional water electrolysis.
  • Sensitive to humidity with possible size deviation ±0.5 cm and temporary wrinkles, which can be eliminated by soaking in deionized water. Avoid forward bias to prevent blistering, delamination or irreversible membrane damage.
